Product Overview

        HPE 746844-002 (disk body manufactured by Hitachi, now under Western Digital Group) is an enterprise grade NVMe solid-state drive positioned for read intensive workloads. This hard drive represents the collaboration between HPE and Hitachi, aimed at providing a high-performance, high reliability, and cost optimized NVMe  storage solution for HPE server platforms, suitable for scenarios such as operating system booting, general storage, and cache acceleration.

It is mainly aimed at enterprise applications that require NVMe low latency and high IOPS performance, but the daily write volume is not extremely demanding.

1. Core features and specifications

       Capacity: 920 Gigabytes (GB)

       This is a typical enterprise level capacity point. The available capacity for its users is less than 1TB due to the large amount of Over Previewing (OP) space set in the hard drive firmware for garbage collection, wear leveling, and maintaining long-term stable high performance.

         Interface and Protocol: NVMe over PCIe 3.0 x4 Lanes

         Fully utilize the bandwidth of PCIe 3.0, providing transmission speeds far exceeding traditional SATA and SAS interfaces and extremely low access latency.

         Form Factor: 2.5 inches U.2 (SFF-8639)

         Adopting a standard 2.5-inch hard drive appearance, it can be installed into the server's standard 2.5-inch hot swappable disk slots (requiring the server backplane to    support NVMe protocol).

         Performance indicators (typical values):

         Continuous reading speed: up to 3200 MB/s

         Continuous write speed: up to 1200 MB/s

         Random read IOPS (4K): up to 420000

         Random write IOPS (4K): up to 75000

         Note: Performance varies depending on server configuration, drivers, and workload. Its reading performance is particularly outstanding.

         Durability and reliability:

          DWPD (Daily Whole Disk Write Count): Typically 0.8 (within the 5-year warranty period). This means that during the 5-year warranty period, 920GB * 0.8=~736GB of data can be written daily. This defines its suitability for applications with moderate write volumes.

          TBW (maximum number of bytes that can be written): 1.34 Petabytes (PB)

          Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF): 2000000 hours

         NAND flash type: 3D TLC NAND

         Providing the best balance between cost, capacity, and durability, it is the mainstream choice for modern enterprise grade SSDs.

2. Advanced features

         Enterprise level power protection: Integrated power outage protection (PLP) function, utilizing onboard capacitors to provide temporary power for critical            operations in case of unexpected power outages, ensuring the safe writing of cached data to flash memory and preventing data loss.

          End to end data path protection: Implement protection mechanisms throughout the entire data path from the host to cache and then to NAND to ensure data integrity and consistency.

          HPE exclusive firmware and integration: Pre flashed HPE intelligent firmware, deeply integrated with the iLO management engine of HPE ProLiant servers (such as Gen9, Gen10), achieving out of the box compatibility, simplified deployment, and centralized monitoring.

3. Typical application scenarios

          This NVMe SSD is optimized for the following read intensive and enterprise wide applications:

          Server operating system boot driver: Provides extremely fast system startup and application loading speed.

          Universal Enterprise Storage: Provides high-speed storage support for file servers, mail servers, web servers, and more.

           Virtualization Platform (VDI&Virtualization): Used to host virtual machines, improve virtual machine density and response speed (especially suitable for scenarios with multiple read operations).

           Read intensive cache: As a read cache layer for databases or software defined storage (SDS), it accelerates frequently accessed data.

           Data Analysis and Business Intelligence (BI): Accelerating database queries and report generation processes.

4. Compatibility

             Server platform: HPE servers with NVMe enabled backplanes are required.

             For example, specific models in the HPE ProLiant Gen9 and Gen10 series (such as DL360 Gen9/10, DL380 Gen9/10) can be supported after configuring NVMe backplane options.
